Watamu is powered by two distinct monsoon trade winds: the Kaskazi (northeast) from December to April and the Kuzi (south/southeast) from June to September. The Kaskazi brings warm, consistent breezes typically ranging between 15-25 knots, while the Kuzi is generally stronger and more powerful, often reaching 20-30 knots. These winds are highly reliable during their respective peaks, making the area a dependable choice for travelers.

Hazards

  • Watch for shallow coral heads and exposed reef sections during low tide sessions.
  • Sea urchins are common in shallow areas; wearing protective booties is highly recommended.
  • Be aware of strong tidal currents, especially near reef channels during spring tides.

Plan your sessions according to the tide table, as low tide offers the best flat water but increases hazard exposure.
