Lake Silvaplana

At 1,800 m in the Engadin valley, Lake Silvaplana is the birthplace of alpine kitesurfing and one of the most scenic spots anywhere. The thermal Maloja wind sweeps down the valley from the south-west almost every summer afternoon, hitting the lake with impressive reliability. The dedicated kite beach on the Silvaplana shore, glacier-fed turquoise water and 3,000 m peaks all around make it a bucket-list session — bring a wetsuit even in July.

Wind & conditions

The Maloja thermal blows south-westerly at 12–25 knots from roughly midday to sunset on fair-weather days, June to early September being most reliable. Water is cold year-round (8–17˚C) and the altitude means true wind feels stronger; the kite zone is regulated with a dedicated launch area.

What to expect

  • Wind season: May – September
  • Air: 8˚C – 22˚C
  • Water: 8˚C – 17˚C
  • Wave spots: No
